Residential Flat Roofing

Stout Roofing offers single-ply flat roofing systems to cover flat roof homes or even back patios. Most patios are roofed with a hot or cold roofing system such as a heat-applied system known as a modified torch down application or a self-adhered system also known as a peel and stick system.

The torch down systems can be messy and hard to replace or repair. The cold applied peel and stick systems don’t always adhere or bond with the underlayment/base sheet well enough to with stand strong winds. Stout Roofing recommends a single-ply roofing system for almost all low to no slope roofs.

What is single-ply?

Essentially, a single-ply membrane roof is comprised of flexible sheets of synthetic polymer that can be divided into two main groups, thermoplastics and synthetic rubber. Due to the fact that thermoplastics can be re-heated and re-molded, they have become the number one option for many industrial roofing contractors undertaking flat roof installations. They are Stout Roofing’s product of choice for almost all flat to low slope projects.

Types of Thermoplastics

The two main types of thermoplastics are TPO and PVC. TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin, and PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. When installing a TPO or PVC roof system, the material is screwed down every 6” to 12” depending on the manufacturers’ specifications. The edges overlap and are heat welded together to essentially become one large piece of roofing material. This protects against wind, water and the other elements to ensure your roofing system keeps out water and holds strong through potential high winds.

The roofing system can come in other colors, but is typically a white material. The white will have the biggest impact on energy efficiency. The product is designed to protect itself from the damaging UV rays of the sun and the white color reflects the heat. Another huge advantage is the ease of maintenance and repair. Since the product can be heat welded to itself any damages found and be quickly and easily patched with a piece of the TPO or PVC membrane.
